The hala tree is one of the most important plants to the people of Oceania. It is especially important to Kanaka ʻŌiwi (Hawaiians). It was used to make the strong sails that brought kānaka (people) several thousand miles across the open ocean to Hawaiʻi. The leaves of the hala are harvested and used to make sleeping mats, sails, pillows, fans, and other items.
